Title: Neat Tools, Java like C++ Cross Platform API, and my life in Bell Labs

Speaker: Dr. Yuh-Jye Chang, Computer Software Researcher at Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent

Abstract: In this talk, I wil focus on three topics.

1. Neat Tools: Neat Tools is an object oriented visual programming environment. It is a software application, which allows the user to take many kinds of inputs and program a computer system to respond according to your instructions.

2. Java like C++ Cross Platform API: This C++ API is written follow Java specifications. It's a thin layer between your application and variety of major operating systems including Unix, Linux, Solaris, Windows, and Windows Mobile. By using this API, you can write an application once, complie and run your application natively in the supported platforms.

3. Life in Bell Labs: I think grad student might be interested to know what it is like to work in industrial research lab like Bell Labs. I will briefly introduce my daily life in Bell Labs' US headquarter - Murray Hill.

#######

Bio: Dr. Yuh-Jye Chang is a member of technical staff in the Computer Systems and Security Research department within the Enabling Computing Technologies domain of Bell Labs. Mr. Chang holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Nation Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan and a PhD degree in Computer Information Science from the Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. During his career in Bell Labs, he helped architect and design several large-scale projects including SoftSwitch, Optical Service Manager (SoftWave), Mobius, and OmniAccess 3500 (Alcatel-Lucent Venture Project). He received Bell Labs Teamwork Award - "Alcatel-Lucent Ventures - Evros" in 2007, President's Gold Award - "ISGO, PS, iLocator" in 2005, Teamwork Award - "Mobius, NetProvisioner and NPM" in 2004, Teamwork Award - "iLocator" in 2004, and President's Gold Award - "SoftWare" in 2000. He also awarded with US patents "User Interface Methods and Apparatus for Roaming Access to Subscription Services" and "Alert-me management system for telecommunications infrastructure and method of operation thereof".

Alex Blainey's Hello World NeatTools Program:

I'm having a bout of insomnia so thought i'd have a play with neattools. The result is attached. It was a little bit harder than the average 'hello world' program. It has a few quirks mainly because the delay module won't pass a chain of zero's. I should have made flip flop based memory, but was just experimenting and the end result works (mostly). Enjoy.

NeatTools is a visual programing environment. Programs are built using modules connected together in such a way as to manipulate a flow of data. Data flows into a module, where it is acted upon in some way by the module, for instance, the Integer Add Module takes two connections of integers, sums them, and outputs the result. The modules are divided by type into several toolboxes.

TNG-3B is a data-acquisition device for general-purpose and human-computer interfacing. TNG is pronounced 'thing' in partial reference to The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, and stands for "totally neat gadget". It is manufactured and sold by SenSyr LLC.

The visual programming environment NeatTools has built-in support for TNG-3B, though it can operate with other devices. TNG-3B can operate with software other than NeatTools. Any software package that can control a standard PC serial (COM:) port can communicate with TNG-3B. That software must be able to continuously assert DTR and RTS which are RS-232 handshake lines. However, since NeatTools and TNG-3B have been designed, from the outset, to work together, there are clear advantages in doing so.

Installation
TNG-3B is easy to install and to use. No card has to be installed on the inside of the computer. Sensors and other devices simply plug into TNG-3B. Multiple TNG-3Bs may be attached to a single computer and used simultaneously. With a single serial cable connecting a TNG to the host computer, cabling is often simplified over installed-board solutions. TNG-3B works with many USB to RS-232 adapters. A 6', 9-conductor M-F serial cable is included.

Technical Specifications
TNG-3B is an input-only device that streams analog (8 channels with 8-bit resolution) and digital data (8 lines) to a host computer connected by an RS-232 serial port at 19.2 kbps. Operating power is derived from otherwise unused RS-232 handshaking and data lines. Each input has its own connector jack: a 3.5 mm stereo phone jacks for analog inputs, and 2.5 mm mono phone jacks for digital inputs. TNG-3B is a 5 volt device.
NeatLab has eight 10-bit analog-to-digital (4 on 3.5 mm stereo jacks; 4 on RJ-45 connector), eight digital I/O lines (4 on 3.5 mm jacks; 4 on RJ-45 connector), and two SPI ports (lower RJ-45 connectors). All digital I/O lines can be independently configured as either input or output. A second digital I/O port, Port D, is available on an unpopulated header. Unlike TNG-4 and TNG-5, NeatLab has no optical isolation circuitry.

NeatLab has two jumpers. JP1 selects TNG-3B emulation mode. JP2 selects 8-bit A/D resolution. NeatLab will stream data like a TNG-3B with the two jumpers installed. NeatLab has to be power-cycled for jumper selections to be recognized. NeatLab is compatible with the NeatTools TNG-3B module with these jumpers installed.

System Requirements
System Requirements for NeatTools are incredibly minimal:
* Pentium PC 133MHz or higher
* Windows 95/98/NT
* 64 MB of RAM (Recommended)
* 800 x 600 monitor resolution

--- Windows 7 ----

There are some problems with using NeatTools with Windows 7. Mostly, this has to do with editing parameters.
There is a “Microsoft XP mode” VM free download ().
It works fine so far, including accessing a USB-to-serial converter and running TNG-3B. It should be fine for programming
at least without the Win7 quirks, and then ntl’s can be run under Win7 or XP on the same machine. So no need for VMWare.
